FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Marc Grobman is "unearthed" at Jennifer Joyce Pottery Gallery

Santa Monica CA – September 20, 2007 Jennifer Joyce Pottery Studio and Gallery presents "unearthed" a solo exhibition of art pottery by Marc Grobman. The public is invited to an opening Saturday, October 13 from 5 pm to 8 pm and pieces will be on view through Saturday October 27. The show will be on view during the Pico Art Walk on October 14.

Grobman's work is abstract yet strikingly familiar. With references to nature, the pieces recall human, plant and animal forms, at once playful, dramatic, grotesque and sensual. Though not conceived as functional pottery, many of the works are vase forms that are glazed to be water-tight. The pieces are wheel-thrown and then enhanced with hand-building and sculpting.

"I like to call it punk pottery," says Grobman of the thorny, pock-marked vessels, "But there are a lot of other influences. Modern design, outsider art, Antonio Gaudi's organic shapes, California Funk – it's all in there."

A professional graphic designer and editor of the quirky online magazine www.Quixo.com, this is Grobman's first solo show. Earlier this year he began a campaign to improve the design of Donald T. Sterling Corporation's ads in the LA Times, earning much blog buzz and a "Website of the Month" mention in Los Angeles Magazine.

Jennifer Joyce Gallery and Pottery Studio is located at 3028 Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica at the corner of 31st Street and Pico Blvd., directly across the street from McCabe's Guitar Shop and one block west of Trader Joe's.

For more than 10 years Jennifer Joyce has focused on creating functional and sculptural ceramics while offering ceramics classes to artists and non-artists out of her Santa Monica studio.

An online preview of the exhibition can be found at http://www.quixo.com/unearthed  where visitors can take several pottery pieces for a little spin.
